The 5-Minute Dealer Verification
Car finance fraud is increasingly targeting customers during the document collection phase, with the FCA issuing multiple warnings about scammers posing as legitimate dealers. Before sharing any personal information, verify that you're dealing with a legitimate, FCA-authorised dealer. This takes less than 5 minutes but prevents most common car finance scams.
FCA Register Check (2 minutes)
- 1. Visit register.fca.org.uk
- 2. Search dealer's business name
- 3. Verify "Consumer credit" permission
- 4. Check address matches their showroom
Red flag: If they're not listed or lack consumer credit authority, they cannot legally arrange car finance. Stop immediately.
When Legitimate Dealers Request Documents
A legitimate, FCA-registered dealer follows a predictable process. They will never ask for your bank statements or driving licence before you've even seen the car. Understanding the legitimate timeline helps you spot when something is off — and protects you from handing over sensitive documents to the wrong people.
Instant Scam Detection
NEVER Share Documents If:
- • Requested before test drive
- • Dealer not FCA registered
- • Using personal email (Gmail, etc.)
- • No physical showroom address
Safe Sharing Timeline:
- • Day 1: Contact details only
- • After test drive: Basic income info
- • Serious application: Full documents
- • Never: Banking passwords
UK car finance applications typically require specific documentation for affordability assessments under FCA regulations. You'll need: photo ID (passport or photocard driving licence), three months of consecutive bank statements showing your income and regular outgoings, recent payslips or SA302 form if self-employed, and current proof of address (council tax statement or utility bill within 3 months).
Document Requirements by Finance Type
Hire Purchase (HP)
- • Photo ID (passport or driving licence)
- • 3 months bank statements
- • Proof of income (payslips/SA302)
- • Proof of address (under 3 months old)
- • Employment confirmation (if recently started)
Personal Contract Purchase (PCP)
- • Same as HP requirements
- • Additional affordability checks for balloon payment
- • Credit history assessment
- • Annual mileage estimate documentation
Important: Legitimate lenders request documents through secure portals or established finance companies, never through personal messaging apps or unsecured email.
Under Consumer Credit Act regulations, finance companies must verify your identity and assess affordability before approving any agreement. This means they need genuine documentation, but they also have legal obligations to protect your personal data during the application process.
Secure Document Sharing
When you do need to share documents with a legitimate, FCA-registered dealer, how you share them matters just as much as who you share them with. Email is the worst option — your bank statements and ID sit unencrypted on multiple servers indefinitely. The dealer's inbox, their finance team's inbox, the lender's inbox — that's at least three permanent copies of your most sensitive financial information.
Smart Document Protection
- • Watermark documents: “FOR [DEALER NAME] CAR FINANCE ONLY — [DATE]”
- • Redact unnecessary details: Keep salary deposits, remove shopping transactions
- • Use secure links: Password-protected with automatic deletion after download
- • Track access: Know exactly who viewed your documents and when
Bank statements reveal extensive personal information beyond just income verification. They show spending patterns, subscription services, medical payments, and other private financial relationships. Under GDPR, you have the right to provide only the information necessary for the finance application's legitimate purpose.
Bank Statement Redaction Guide
Keep Visible (Finance Assessment)
- • Salary/wage deposits
- • Regular income (benefits, pensions)
- • Rent/mortgage payments
- • Council tax payments
- • Existing loan/credit payments
- • Utility bills (gas, electric, water)
- • Account opening/closing balance
Can Redact (Personal Information)
- • Entertainment spending details
- • Medical/healthcare payments
- • Online shopping transactions
- • Subscription services
- • Personal transfers to family/friends
- • Investment account movements
- • Cash withdrawals (unless excessive)
Tip: Most PDF editors (including free ones like PDFtk or online tools) allow you to black out sensitive transactions while preserving the document's integrity for verification purposes.
Always watermark documents shared for car finance applications. Add "FOR [DEALER NAME] CAR FINANCE APPLICATION ONLY - [DATE]" across each page. This limits potential misuse if documents are retained longer than necessary or shared inappropriately within the dealership or finance company.
If Something Goes Wrong
If you suspect you've shared documents with a fraudulent dealer or your identity has been compromised during a car finance application, act immediately. The faster you respond, the less damage can be done.
Emergency Action (Do immediately)
- 1. Stop all communication with the suspected scammer
- 2. Report to Action Fraud: 0300 123 2040
- 3. Alert your bank's fraud department immediately
- 4. Check credit reports at Experian, Equifax, and TransUnion for unauthorised applications
- 5. Consider CIFAS Protective Registration to flag your identity with lenders
Report the Dealer
If the dealer claimed to be FCA-registered but isn't, report them to the FCA as well. This helps protect other consumers from the same scam.
